North Korea Talks Of Destroying Aircraft Carriers, Tests Ship-Killing Missile
"The advancements in the last six months have caused great concern
America’s aircraft carriers appear to be the latest target for North Korea’s rhetoric — and perhaps its armed forces.
On Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un oversaw drills by his air force aimed at attacking enemy aircraft carriers. The goal of the contest was to train all flight commanding officers “to be a match for a hundred fighters capable of destroying any targets including enemy aircraft carriers … and encouraging all the army to be combat-ready for national reunification,” according to the Korean Central News Agency.
Kim praised the fighter pilots, claiming they “successfully performed diverse artistry flights, their flights were wonderful and they fully showed scientific flying and perfect aviation.”
Three days later, North Korea fired several land-to-ship missiles into the Sea of Japan in a region where two United States aircraft carriers — the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Carl Vinson — had been conducting maneuvers with South Korean and Japanese forces earlier in the week.
The Vinson will be leaving the Korean region soon to return to port, although the USS Nimitz is expected to pass through the area in the coming weeks
South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said several missiles flew an estimated 200 km and were intended to show North Korea can sink enemy ships, the South Korean military said.
