Fans and former fans of R. Kelly are reacting to claims he is keeping women in a cult. See Twitter reaction tweets below.
On Monday, Buzzfeed published an investigative story headlined, “R. Kelly Is Holding Women Against Their Will In A ‘Cult,’ Parents Told Police.” The article alleges, “Six women live in properties rented by Kelly in Chicago and the Atlanta suburbs, and he controls every aspect of their lives: dictating what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.” It is also claimed the women are being physically and verbally abused. The report follows years of
rumors, and even civil and criminal cases, about sexual misconduct.
But amid welfare checks and FBI investigations sparked by these latest contentions, police have not found cause for new charges. And an attorney for Kelly is quoted as saying, “We can only wonder why folks would persist in defaming a great artist who loves his fans, works 24/7, and takes care of all of the people in his life. He works hard to become the best person and artist he can be. It is interesting that stories and tales debunked many years ago turn up when his goal is to stop the violence; put down the guns; and embrace peace and love. I suppose that is the price of fame. Like all of us, Mr. Kelly deserves a personal life. Please respect that.”
The disturbing story has prompted “R. Kelly” to trend on Twitter, where users are discussing the allegations and the singer’s sordid history. Among well-known personalities weighing in, there was Charlamagne Tha God, who stated, “I really want to know what is the clinical term for whatever Psychological condition R Kelly has.” Activist DeRay asked, “How does the industry still support R. Kelly?”
@ImStillRealAF shared a gif of a guy shaking his head into his hand, and wrote, “When you are wake up to R. Kelly trending and just KNOW underaged girls are involved.” Referring to one of the article’s examples, which quoted a mom discussing how her family became involved with the performer, @JayKenMinaj asked, “Why are you as a parent giving your daughter ‘away’ to be mentored by R. Kelly? That’s a side eye in itself.” @_illionaire similarly said, “0% chance I’m bringing my teen daughter to r kelly to get her career going.”
“R Kelly was in his mid-late 20s when he married his 15 year old r&b protege. That should’ve ended him right there,” tweeted @3CarryOnItems. @theloudgirl commented, “color me not surprised that r Kelly is a terrible human being who has now figured out how to make the law work for him.” @ACaseOnline remarked, “R Kelly has a chronological history of this kind of behavior. People continued to ignore it for their need for R&B.” But then there were others like @X0fierceX0, who wondered, “So does this new R Kelly story mean I can’t play “step in the name of love” at my wedding anymore?”
