Tonys 2017: all of the winners at the 71st annual awards
The 71st annual Tony Awards, honoring the best and brightest of Broadway for the 2016-'17 season, will hand out 24 golden statuettes on Sunday night. Actor and former Tony winner Kevin Spacey will host, in a ceremony that is expected to be less song-and-dance heavy than has been the trend for the past few years. But don’t rule out a surprise song at some point in the night: Spacey may
be Frank Underwood to most of the world, but he’s been known to cut a rug or two.
This year, the acting awards for the lead role in a musical are considered a lock: Broadway legend Bette Midler is widely expected to win the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her turn in Hello, Dolly!, and Pitch Perfect’s Ben Platt is the runaway favorite for Best Actor in a Musical for his role in Dear Evan Hansen.
The other categories are a little tighter. Keep a particular eye out for the Best Actress in a Play award, which features a lineup of heavyweights: Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Sally Field, former Lizzie Bennett Jennifer Ehle, and the category’s two frontrunners, the widely beloved — and currently unrecognized — Laura Linney and Laurie Metcalf.
We’ll be updating this post throughout the night as winners are announced, so keep checking back in to see who will be walking away with a Tony.
