Plague of rats prompts fears of natural disaster in Burma

More than 4,000 of the verminous creatures have been killed in the Burmese island of Haingyi as residents fear the surprise appearance might mean an earthquake is on the way. Locals have been offered 50 kyat (about 4 US cents or 3 British pence) for every rat corpse they bring to the authorities as the village pulls together and attacks the horde with slingshots, sticks and rocks
