A group of experts from Germany's armed forces will provide a training workshop for members of the Egyptian army on dealing with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the German embassy in Cairo said on Thursday.
The two-week training programme, scheduled to take place in July, is to support Egypt's efforts to "preserve international peace and protect Egyptian soldiers," the embassy said in a statement emailed to Ahram Online.
The training aims at "improving the capabilities of Egyptian trainers as well as exchanging experience in handling life-threatening explosive devices used in ongoing disputes," the statement added.
Militants in Egypt have carried out deadly attacks that have killed hundreds of police and army personnel over the past four years, mostly in North Sinai. IEDs are often used in the attacks, which have also targeted Coptic Christians and members of the judiciary.
